Sealskin is therefore a 100% natural product, and no two skins are alike – neither in hair length, colour, damage, or size.

Sealskin Quality Classification:
A-grade skins
Very rare skins with a maximum of two minor flaws.
B-grade skins
Also very rare. May contain up to eight minor flaws, typically shrimp bites.
C-grade skins
The most commonly used quality in production at Great Greenland. May have many small flaws as well as 1–2 larger flaws that can be worked around during production. Suitable for clothing, crafts, and decoration. Primarily used for coats.
D-grade skins
Have noticeable flaws such as areas without hair or damaged leather. Only used for small and medium-sized products where the damage can be avoided or incorporated into the design.
E-grade skins and discarded skins
Highly damaged skins, only used for small products such as keyrings, patchwork, and jewellery.

A-, B-, and C-grade skins are used for clothing, crafts, and decoration, whereas D-, E-, and discarded skins are not suitable as decorative skins due to the damage.

Natural skins and dyeing:
Natural skins can vary in appearance, and flaws are more apparent than on dyed skins. Dyeing is primarily used to salvage skins with discolouration from being discarded, thus contributing to more sustainable production. Beautiful, undamaged natural skins are not dyed. Dyeing can also mitigate visible flaws such as shrimp bites and discolouration, making them almost imperceptible in many cases.

Seal Types/Species
Harp Seal (Harp Seal / Silk Seal)
The harp seal, also known as the Greenland seal or silk seal, has a shiny and soft skin, often described as silky. It is primarily used for clothing but is also suitable for interiors.
The skin is typically greyish with scattered spots in varying quantities.

Ringed Seal (netside)
The ringed seal is the most well-known seal species in Greenland. It is recognised by its characteristic ring patterns along its back, which have been used in Inuit clothing for centuries.
The skin is light grey with distinct markings that vary from light to almost black tones. The ringed seal is found in both long-haired and short-haired variants – where the long-haired has a more fur-like appearance, and the short-haired appears smoother and often larger.

Important to know: All skins at Great Greenland are approved under the EU’s current regulations for sealskin.

All product images show B/C-grade skins
Each skin is unique and varies in colour and size

Great Greenland is owned by the Greenlandic Self-Government. The company’s most important purpose is to preserve and support the sealskin hunting industry in Greenland.
When you shop at Great Greenland, you therefore directly support Greenlandic seal hunters and contribute to maintaining an important part of Greenland’s culture and economy.

Qualities (Please note all photos on the website are of B/C-grade skins) At Great Greenland, we work with six quality…

["post-145295","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.5 -
